Weather Report for 1st Aug’2013 to 8th Aug’2013


Southwest monsoon was vigorous over Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Telangana and interior Karnataka for one or two days of the last week.

• IMD forecast that India will have 98% of its normal (long-period average) rainfall, with an error margin of 5% (+ or -).

Seasonal rainfall (June 1 to July 31, 2013)

• The cumulative seasonal rainfall during June 1 to July 31, 2013 for the country as a whole was 528.1mm which is 17% above normal rainfall of 452.4mm.

• Out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions, the rainfall was excess in eighteen sub-divisions, normal in eleven sub-divisions, and deficit in seven sub-divisions and scanty in zero sub-divisions and no rain in zero sub-division.

• In the country, 43% districts received excess and 27% districts received normal rainfall during southwest monsoon season so far. However, 23% districts received deficient and 7% districts received scanty rainfall and 0% districts received no rainfall.

Outlook for subsequent days from August 1-8, 2013

• Heavy to very heavy rainfall would occur at a few places over Odisha and at one or two places over Chhattisgarh. Heavy rainfall would occur at one or two places over Vidarbha, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura,

Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Saurashtra & Kutch and Konkan & Goa.

Agricultural activities

• Light rainfall received in Eastern regions of Uttar Pradesh state during past few days. Transplanting of rice has been completed up to 66%. In eastern U.P. about 80% transplanting of rice has been completed. Agricultural operations like transplanting of scented rice, hand weeding in transplanted/direct seeded rice, top dressing of nitrogen fertilizer, thinning in pigeon pea and sesame, fertilizer application in sugarcane and maize and plantation of fruit trees are in progress. Low intensity of khaira in rice crop was noticed.

• Heavy to very heavy rainfall received in the Kerala state during past few days. Agricultural operations like weeding, basins in coconut and areca nut fields, making proper drainage in all crops are in progress. Low intensity of mosaic in vegetables, leaf folder in paddy, red palm weevil, bud rot in coconut and pseudo stem weevil in banana were noticed. • Light to moderate amount of rainfall at many places northern Karnataka during past few days. Agricultural operations like sowing of pigeon pea, plant protection in early sown (June) pigeon pea, inter-cultivation and hand weeding in early sown pigeon pea, bajra crops in progress. Low intensity of sucking pests in green gram & onion and leaf minor in lime were noticed.
